An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
